Why Germany’s 1.3 billion euro Ukraine aid package matters

Germany has pledged over 1.3 billion euros in fresh aid to Ukraine. Here is why the package matters and what it includes.

About 1 billion euros goes to military aid: long-range weapons, combat drones, satellite technology and interceptor drones built to stop Russia’s jet-powered attack drones. Another 350 million euros will repair the energy grid before winter.

The timing is critical. Russia has been pounding Ukraine’s power plants and substations. Without repairs, millions could face blackouts in the cold months.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced the package in Kyiv on October 4, as air-raid sirens sounded. He travelled with the economy minister and industry leaders, and the two countries signed deals worth over 8.5 billion euros.

This signals a shift from emergency aid to a long-term partnership. Germany is moving towards joint weapons production with Ukraine rather than just donations.

Germany has given over 40 billion euros since 2022, making it one of Ukraine’s biggest backers. The message from Berlin: support will continue for as long as the war lasts.
