India says no timeline on Hasina extradition decision

India has said it cannot provide a specific timeframe for a decision on Bangladesh’s request to extradite former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, as the matter remains under legal review.
Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi made the remarks at the Bay of Bengal Conversation 2026 in Dhaka on Saturday. “Nobody can give you a time frame,” he said, adding that the request was being handled through a “well-structured” legal process.
The government led by Tarique Rahman has renewed the demand for Hasina’s return to face charges in Bangladesh. The 79-year-old former prime minister has lived in India since August 2024, when her government collapsed.
Bangladesh first sought her extradition in December 2024. A Bangladeshi tribunal sentenced her in absentia to death in November 2025.
The process is governed by the 2013 India-Bangladesh extradition treaty, amended in 2016. The treaty includes a political-offence exception.
Trivedi said Hasina’s arrival in India in August 2024 happened under humanitarian and security constraints, and that India had little choice at the time.
