Imran Khan supporters march on Islamabad after talks fail

Supporters of jailed former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan launched a march toward Islamabad on October 4 after talks on his release collapsed, according to multiple reports. Two rounds of talks over the weekend failed to break the deadlock, after which Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party decided to go ahead with its plan. Videos on the party’s social media showed supporters joining the march from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which the party rules, and setting off in convoys. Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said the march would reach Khairabad, 80 kilometres west of Islamabad, by Thursday, when the next phase would be announced. The government has erected barriers of shipping containers to block main access routes to the capital. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi confirmed the talks had failed and warned the party would not be allowed to create a disturbance. Khan has been in jail since August 2023 following convictions his party calls politically motivated. The standoff adds to Pakistan’s political and economic strain as authorities brace for another confrontation in the capital.
