Germany pledges 1.3 billion euros in new aid to Ukraine

Germany announced more than 1.3 billion euros in new support for Ukraine on Sunday during Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to Kyiv, as Russian attacks intensified across the country. Around 1 billion euros of the package is earmarked for military assistance, including long-range weapons, combat drones and satellite technology, according to reports of the announcement. Germany also plans to finance the joint production of interceptor drones designed to counter Russia’s fast jet-powered attack drones. Another 350 million euros will go to Ukraine’s energy sector, funding generators, substation repairs and restoration work ahead of winter. Merz travelled to Kyiv by train with Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and a delegation of German defence and energy industry leaders. Air-raid sirens sounded in the capital during the visit, reports said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the package, saying the weapons would help now and the energy support was vital before winter. Germany says it has provided Ukraine more than 43 billion euros since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022.
