Delhi reclaims 100 acres from garbage mountains in 18 months

Delhi has cleared 217.17 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste from its three landfill sites in 18 months, reclaiming nearly 100 acres of land. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the figures on October 3.

The waste was removed from Okhla, Bhalswa and Ghazipur, the capital’s three garbage mountains. Gupta said the garbage mountain at Okhla has almost vanished.

The announcement came at the foundation-stone ceremony for new waste-processing units. Okhla will get a 1,400-tonne-per-day facility worth 103 crore rupees, Ghazipur a 700-tonne-per-day unit, and Singhola an 800-tonne-per-day plant costing 42 crore rupees. A biogas plant at Ghazipur will turn organic waste into clean fuel.

Gupta said the government will take its last selfie with the garbage mountains. Delhi generates 3,000 to 4,000 tonnes of fresh waste daily, which must now be processed on the same day.

The chief minister also said drain-cleaning machines have been bought for every assembly constituency to fix the city’s monsoon flooding problem.
