Flavio Bolsonaro stuns Lula to win Brazil’s first round

Senator Flavio Bolsonaro won the first round of Brazil’s presidential election, dealing a shock defeat to incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Neither candidate crossed the 50 percent threshold, so the two face a runoff on October 25.
With nearly all ballots counted, Bolsonaro had about 47 percent of the vote to Lula’s 45 percent. The result beat almost every opinion poll. On the eve of voting, Datafolha had put Bolsonaro at 42 percent against Lula’s 45.
Flavio, 45, is the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. The elder Bolsonaro was sentenced last year to 27 years in prison for trying to overturn his 2022 defeat to Lula.
The Bolsonaro family had a strong night overall. Jair’s wife Michelle won a Senate seat, as did his son Carlos. His youngest son Jair Renan and his brother Renato won seats in the lower house.
Bolsonaro told supporters the result marked the end of Lula’s Workers’ Party era. Lula said he had expected to win in the first round and called the runoff the ultimate test for the country.
