Bengal UCC Promise Explained: What Adhikari Announced

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday promised to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the state within six months. He was addressing a Kolkata event organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad to mark the birth centenary of former VHP president Ashok Singhal.
‘I am giving you my word. Very soon, after Uttarakhand and Gujarat, UCC will be implemented in West Bengal. Give me six months,’ Adhikari said. He also promised stringent laws against what he described as ‘love jihad’, ‘land jihad’ and religious conversion.
The institutional groundwork is already underway. The state government has constituted a high-level committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai to examine a draft UCC Bill. The proposed law aims to standardise civil laws across communities on marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption.
The UCC was a key BJP poll promise in the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections. Adhikari said his government would function within the Constitution but would not tolerate attacks on Indian culture, traditions and places of worship.
