SC stays order making Noida DM pay Rs 5 lakh in Akriti NSA case

The Supreme Court has stayed an Allahabad High Court order that directed Gautam Buddh Nagar District Magistrate Medha Roopam to pay Rs 5 lakh from her salary. The order related to the detention of student Akriti Chaudhary under the National Security Act. A bench of Justices Satish Chandra Sharma and N Kotishwar Singh passed the interim order and listed the matter for further hearing on October 7. The court stayed paragraphs 27 to 33 of the high court judgment. These paragraphs carried the strictures against the district magistrate. Chaudhary, a 25-year-old Delhi University history graduate, was detained under the NSA in connection with the Noida workers’ protest in April. On September 2, the high court had quashed her detention. It found the detention was based on a story it described as concocted by the state. The court also directed her immediate release if she was not wanted in any other case. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared for the district magistrate. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi represented the Uttar Pradesh government. Senior advocate Collin Gonsalves appeared for Chaudhary on caveat.
