India Crosses 420 Million Chronic Disease Screenings

India has conducted more than 420 million screenings each for hypertension and diabetes. Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda announced the milestone on October 1, 2026, at the World Congress of Gastroenterology in New Delhi.
The screenings were done through about 186,000 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs across the country. The population-based initiative targets adults aged 30 and older.
The network has also logged over 360 million oral cancer screenings, 170 million breast cancer screenings and 90 million cervical cancer screenings. The figures reflect a decisive shift toward catching non-communicable diseases before they cause severe complications.
Nadda said the Mandirs have become an important point of contact for communities. They are strengthening preventive and promotive healthcare services, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.
The minister also highlighted improvements in maternal and child health. Institutional deliveries have risen sharply. Maternal mortality fell 86 percent between 1990 and 2023.
Health experts note the real challenge now is converting screenings into diagnoses, treatment and lifelong disease management.
