Zidane salutes Ronaldo after Portugal camp exit

France head coach Zinedine Zidane has paid a warm tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo after the star quit Portugal’s national team camp.
“I was lucky to have him with me and he made me win incredible things, so I take my hat off to Cristiano,” Zidane said at a press conference before France’s Nations League match against Belgium.
The 41-year-old Ronaldo left the Portugal squad after a reported falling-out with head coach Jorge Jesus. He is expected to explain his decision soon.
Zidane and Ronaldo enjoyed a trophy-laden spell together at Real Madrid between 2016 and 2018. Ronaldo scored 112 goals in 114 appearances under the Frenchman.
Together they won three straight Champions League titles and a La Liga crown, along with two Club World Cups and two UEFA Super Cups.
“What he did is exceptional,” Zidane added. He said Ronaldo’s career should be celebrated in the right way. The episode has reignited debate about the forward’s international future with Portugal.
