ChatGPT personal finance explained: what linking your bank does

ChatGPT can now link to your bank accounts and answer money questions using your real financial data. Here is what the personal finance feature does.
You connect accounts through Plaid, a secure service used by many finance apps. It supports more than 12,000 US institutions, including Chase, Fidelity, and American Express. ChatGPT then builds a dashboard of spending, subscriptions, investments, and upcoming bills.
Instead of generic advice, you get personal answers: where your spending went last month, which subscriptions drain your budget, or whether you can afford a car loan. OpenAI says over 200 million people already ask ChatGPT money questions monthly.
Important limits: the access is read-only. ChatGPT cannot move money, see full account numbers, or change settings. You can disconnect anytime.
The feature launched for Pro users in May 2026 and has now expanded across all US plans, including Free. OpenAI plans Intuit integration next, which could bring tax-aware answers.
