UPSC turns 100, PM hails rise of women officers

The Union Public Service Commission has marked its hundredth year. The centenary event was held at Bharat Mandapam on October 1.

The Prime Minister addressed the gathering. He noted how the services have changed since Independence.

Women were 3 percent of the civil services in 1952, he said. Their share is now above 30 percent. The rise reflects decades of expanding opportunity.

The UPSC runs India’s toughest recruitment exams. It selects officers for the IAS, IPS and other central services.

Lakhs of aspirants appear for the civil services examination each year. Only a few hundred make the final list.

The centenary comes as the commission modernises its processes. Digital applications and transparent selection have widened access.

The Prime Minister’s message put the focus on inclusion. The services, he suggested, now mirror the country better than before.

The UPSC was set up in 1926. A hundred years on, it remains the gateway to the steel frame of Indian administration.
