Ford rehires 300 inspectors after AI checks fall short

Ford has rehired more than 300 veteran quality inspectors after finding that artificial intelligence systems could not match the judgment of experienced human workers, according to Bloomberg. The automaker had hoped AI tools, including 900 AI-powered cameras across plants, could handle quality checks previously done by senior engineers. The systems fell short, and the veterans are now back.“Mistakenly, we thought that by just introducing artificial intelligence and ingesting the design requirements that we had, that would produce a high-quality product,” said Charles Poon, Ford’s vice president of vehicle hardware engineering.Poon called AI “a fantastic tool” but said it was “only as good as the information you use to train it.” The company had undervalued the experience of engineers who had worked through many product cycles. The rehired inspectors are now training Ford’s AI systems and mentoring younger staff. The move helped Ford top mainstream automakers in a major US quality ranking.
