Wind tenders beat solar for first time in Q1 FY27

Wind power tenders surpassed standalone solar tenders in volume for the first time in the April-June quarter of FY27, the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) said.Total renewable capacity tendered in the quarter was 9.34 GW. Battery storage led with 3.48 GW, or 37.3 percent. Wind followed with 2.35 GW, a 25.2 percent share, ahead of solar at 1.34 GW, or 14.4 percent.Firm and dispatchable renewable energy tenders stood at 1.20 GW, while hybrid projects accounted for 0.82 GW.
Wind capacity tendered rose 193.8 percent from 0.80 GW a year earlier.“Among electricity-generating technologies, wind procurement has surpassed standalone solar in the latest quarter,” said IWTMA CEO Aditya Pyasi. “This marks an important shift where dependable power is becoming as important as capacity addition.”The shift reflects India’s focus on reliable, round-the-clock clean power as the grid absorbs more renewable energy. Analysts say wind pairs well with storage because it often blows in the evening when solar output fades, making the two technologies natural partners for a stable grid.
