Trump and Xi likely to speak this week, White House says

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will likely speak this week, the White House said on Monday. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters outside the West Wing that the call would be the leaders’ first confirmed contact in more than five months. The push for talks comes as trade tensions rise again. Trump last week accused China of violating the Geneva deal that rolled back tariffs for 90 days.
Beijing rejected what it called “bogus” US claims and accused Washington of discriminatory measures.Under the Geneva agreement, the US cut tariffs on Chinese goods from 145 percent to 30 percent, while China cut its levies from 125 percent to 10 percent. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Beijing was “slow-rolling” the agreement.Trump said in April that Xi had called him, but Beijing insisted no recent call had taken place. A spokesman for China’s foreign ministry said on Tuesday that Beijing had “no information to provide” about this week’s expected call.A call could decide whether the tariff truce holds or the trade war between the world’s two biggest economies flares up again.
