OpenAI, Synopsys sign multi-year AI chip-design deal

OpenAI and Synopsys have signed a multi-year agreement to build artificial intelligence models that can operate chip-design software. Announced last week, the deal will produce a model called GPT-Synopsys that works directly with Synopsys’s electronic design automation tools. OpenAI will license Synopsys’s tools, and the two companies will share revenue and take the technology to semiconductor customers together.
Early pilot projects with chipmakers are already underway, the companies said. The model will run on OpenAI’s infrastructure, with customer data encrypted and not used for training. Synopsys chief executive Sassine Ghazi said AI agents would compress chip-design cycles that currently take large engineering teams months.
OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman said the partnership would bring frontier AI to one of the most complex engineering tasks in the world. The agreement is separate from OpenAI’s reported chip-hardware work with Broadcom. It marks a deepening push by AI labs into the semiconductor supply chain.
