Extreme heat warning extended across Los Angeles through October 8

The National Weather Service extended an extreme heat warning across much of the Los Angeles area through October 8, warning of “dangerously hot” conditions with little overnight relief. Inland valleys were forecast to reach 102 to 107 degrees Fahrenheit, downtown Los Angeles 99 to 103, and even the beaches around 90. Forecasters said the heat dome parked over Southern California could push into a second week of October.

On Friday, downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach both hit 103 degrees, breaking daily records. Officials warned the prolonged heat raises the risk of heat illness, especially for outdoor workers, older residents, and people without cooling. Forecasters also flagged an elevated wildfire risk as hot, dry air settles over the region.

Residents were urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat, and check on neighbours. Cooling centres remained open across the county as the region braced for one of the hottest October stretches on record.
