Krrish-Namal bribery case explained: a decade of controversy

A Colombo court has refused arrest warrants in the long-running Krrish corruption case. Here is the backstory.
The case: the Krrish project was a proposed luxury development in Colombo. Investigators allege a bribe of 70 million Sri Lankan rupees was paid to former MP Namal Rajapaksa in 2013 in connection with the deal.
The ruling: on October 2, Colombo’s chief magistrate refused warrants for two former Krrish directors who are in India, saying the evidence was insufficient.
The probe: the case is run by CIABOC, Sri Lanka’s anti-graft commission. Another suspect, Siriwardena, is in remand.
Why it matters: the case is one of several corruption probes from the Rajapaksa era. The ruling is a setback for CIABOC but the investigation continues.
What next: prosecutors may return with stronger evidence. The project itself has been stalled for over a decade amid the legal battles.
The case has survived multiple governments, with each new administration promising action on Rajapaksa-era deals. Critics say the slow pace of such high-profile cases has eroded public trust in anti-corruption bodies.
