Iran sets seven conditions for reopening Hormuz talks

Iran will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz to negotiations until seven conditions of a June interim agreement are met, parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said, according to a Reuters report on October 4.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Tehran could reopen the strait within seven days if the United States accepts the conditions. The US has replied through Qatar, which acted as an intermediary last week.

The strait is the world’s most important oil chokepoint, with about a fifth of global oil consumption passing through it. Any disruption threatens to push energy prices sharply higher.

Tensions around the strait have been high for months, with Iran and the US trading warnings after a series of incidents affecting commercial shipping in the Gulf.

Diplomats say the seven conditions relate to sanctions relief and security guarantees agreed in principle in June. Neither side has published the full list, and talks remain fragile.
