Yemen’s government forces strike Houthi targets in Sanaa, Saada

Yemen’s government forces struck Houthi targets in several parts of the country on Sunday, deepening one of the region’s most grinding conflicts. Military spokesman Colonel Majid al-Nuzaili said the armed forces hit the Houthis in the capital Sanaa, the northwestern governorate of Saada, a group stronghold, and Taiz in the southwest. The strikes come as the wider regional war intensifies. They followed a secret Camp David meeting of US officials on the Iran war and the Saudi-Houthi conflict, and amid fresh attacks on shipping near the Strait of Hormuz. The World Food Programme warned on Friday that three-quarters of Yemen’s population is unable to meet basic food needs. The country remains one of the world’s poorest, and civilians continue to bear the heaviest cost. Separately, Saudi civil defence said shrapnel from an intercepted ballistic missile injured one person in the Asir region on Saturday. The missile was fired by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group, according to Saudi state media. The Houthis control Sanaa and much of northern Yemen. The Saudi-backed government, recognised internationally, has been fighting to reclaim territory in a war that has drawn in regional powers for years.
