Iyer outlines fearless blueprint ahead of West Indies T20Is

Shreyas Iyer wants India’s T20 team to play without fear. The captain laid out his blueprint ahead of the five-match T20I series against the West Indies, which starts on October 6 in Lucknow. ‘We want players to be more liberal, more expressive in terms of being fearless out there and not restrict their instincts,’ Iyer said. He stressed backing players through tough phases and supporting each other. Iyer said his own batting is built on reading the situation. In the powerplay he wants to attack field restrictions. Once set, he aims to build a platform for the batters to follow, and then take the bowling apart. The series is one of Iyer’s first major assignments as T20I captain. It also begins India’s build-up to defending the T20 World Cup in two years. The teams will also play in Ranchi, Indore, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Iyer also backed young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to dominate Indian cricket. The comments come after questions over his own strike rate: in the Asian Games final against Pakistan he scored 21 off 24 balls on a slow pitch.
