New BMW 3 Series debuts with first-ever electric i3

BMW has unveiled the new 3 Series in Germany, and for the first time the model includes a fully electric sedan, the i3. It is the second model built on BMW’s new Neue Klasse platform, after the iX3 SUV.

The electric i3 comes in two variants at launch: the i3 40 xDrive and the i3 50 xDrive. Prices start at 59,900 euros for the i3 40 and 65,900 euros for the i3 50 in Germany.

The i3 50 xDrive has a 108.7 kWh battery with a claimed WLTP range of up to 912 kilometres. Its 800-volt architecture supports DC fast charging up to 400 kW, which can add up to 423 kilometres of range in 10 minutes.

The range also includes mild-hybrid petrol models: the flagship M350 xDrive with 443 hp starts at 80,900 euros, and the entry-level 318 at 49,900 euros.

Orders opened on September 30. The electric i3 is built at BMW’s main plant in Munich, while combustion models are made at Dingolfing. A plug-in hybrid will join in 2027.

The launch matters for BMW because the 3 Series is its best-known model, and the electric i3 is central to scaling the Neue Klasse platform.
