White House forms AI task force to draft risk report in 120 days

The White House has created a task force to examine the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence and recommend what role the federal government should play in overseeing the technology, with a report due within 120 days.

The group will be led by Jay Clayton, who heads the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, according to the Wall Street Journal report on Saturday. Clayton confirmed he would lead the group, known as the "Super Intelligence Force", effectively serving as US President Donald Trump's AI czar.

"The President asked for a group to be formed to ensure delivery on his promise to keep us in a leadership position in super intelligence and to put the interests of the American people first," Clayton said. "Super intelligence" is Trump's term for AI.

The task force will assess the risks posed by AI and what regulatory responsibilities the federal government should bear for the technology. The move comes as frontier AI systems grow more capable and debates over their governance intensify.

Clayton, a senior White House official, is expected to draw on intelligence, industry and regulatory perspectives for the report. The 120-day timeline sets up delivery early in 2027.

The formation of the group signals that AI oversight remains a priority for the administration, which has used both executive action and public-private coordination to shape the technology's development.
