DDA audit finds 190 Delhi parks unsafe, CCTV in only 16

A safety audit of 736 parks run by the Delhi Development Authority has found that only 16 of them have working CCTV cameras.
The audit classified 190 parks as high risk, 258 as medium risk and 288 as low risk. Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu had ordered the audit within a week.
The order followed the gang rape of a teenager at Aastha Kunj Park in Kalkaji. The incident raised urgent questions about safety in the city’s public parks.
The DDA has earmarked 323 more parks for CCTV installation. It identified 520 parks that need more lighting, with work already completed in 106.
Night patrolling has started in 245 major parks. The DDA has asked for armed security personnel at 134 high-risk parks.
The authority also plans to hire 5,000 guards. Biometric attendance for security guards is active in 602 parks.
Boundary problems were found in 399 parks, with repairs completed in 233. Safety information boards have gone up in 115 parks, with 484 more planned.
The audit gives Delhi a clear map of where its green spaces are failing visitors. Fixing them will take procurement, installation and sustained monitoring.
