US beat Mexico 3-0 as teen star Mora sits out friendly

The United States beat Mexico 3-0 in a friendly at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on Saturday night.
Teenagers Julian Hall and Cavan Sullivan scored for the USMNT, with Malik Tillman adding the third. It was Mexico’s heaviest defeat in the rivalry in years.
Mexico played without 17-year-old star Gilberto Mora. Coach Rafa Marquez decided not to risk the midfielder, who is dealing with ankle discomfort.
Mora had scored his first international goal in a 1-1 draw with Colombia. He then sat out the 1-1 draw with Peru, and trainers worked on his ankle all week.
Marquez had said on Friday that Mora was ‘eligible’ for the game. His absence from the squad entirely came as a surprise to fans.
The match was billed as a first meeting between Mora and 17-year-old American prospect Sullivan. That battle will have to wait.
Mexico are still looking for their first win under Marquez, who took over after the World Cup. The USMNT made it two wins in a row after beating Chile 4-2.
