SKM calls rabi MSP hike ‘insult’, urges village protests

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha has rejected the Centre’s latest hike in minimum support prices for rabi crops, calling it an insult to farmers and urging protests across villages, the Hindu BusinessLine reported on Sunday.
The government raised wheat MSP by only Rs 25 per quintal, to Rs 2,610 for the 2027-28 marketing season. The All India Kisan Sabha said this is the smallest wheat hike in over two decades and does not cover rising costs of diesel, fertiliser and irrigation.
Farm bodies say the government calculates returns using the A2+FL cost formula, which leaves out land rent and interest on fixed capital. They demand MSP at 50 per cent above the full C2 cost, as the Swaminathan Commission recommended.
SKM said state recommendations were ignored. It noted Maharashtra had sought Rs 4,525 per quintal for wheat and Gujarat Rs 4,200, both far above the Centre’s figure.
SKM also questioned the pace of procurement, saying only about a quarter of the wheat crop was procured in 2025-26. It called on farmers to read out the MSP order in villages, burn copies of it and gather at district headquarters until a legal MSP guarantee is secured.
