Trump rejects Saudi request for US strikes on Houthis again

President Donald Trump has again rejected requests from Saudi Arabia for direct US military strikes against Yemen’s Houthi movement, according to reports. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made the request twice in recent weeks, Axios reported.
Washington will instead provide intelligence, military advisers and targeting information to support Saudi air operations in Yemen, US officials said. A US official told Axios the country is “not going to take kinetic action for now,” though that could change if the operation runs into trouble.
US Central Command has opposed direct American involvement, viewing Yemen as a distraction from its focus on Iran, according to the reports. Last week Trump was reportedly close to ordering strikes on the Houthis but ultimately decided to wait.
Saudi Arabia and Yemeni government forces are planning a major offensive involving more than 100,000 Yemeni troops to retake the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a key Red Sea shipping chokepoint. Pakistan has sent 30,000 to 40,000 troops to Saudi Arabia to help defend its borders, a Pakistani official said.
The Houthis have carried out drone and missile attacks on Saudi energy facilities. Riyadh says restoring control of the coast is central to reviving peace talks.
