CBDT extends tax audit report deadline to October 21

The Central Board of Direct Taxes has extended the deadlines for tax audit reports and income tax returns for assessment year 2026-27.

Under Circular No. 07/2026 dated September 28, the tax audit report deadline moves from September 30 to October 21, 2026. The ITR deadline for audit cases moves from October 31 to November 21, 2026.

The relief applies to companies, firms and other assessees whose accounts require audit under Section 44AB. Transfer pricing cases stay on the November 30 track.

Tax professionals say the extension gives teams three extra weeks for reconciliations and sign-offs. But interest under Section 234A continues from the original due date, so businesses with tax dues should pay on time.

The board has said a formal order to this effect will be issued separately. CAs and companies have been advised to realign their compliance calendars.

Missing the October 21 date can attract a penalty under Section 271B, so taxpayers should not treat the extra time lightly.
