Southwest monsoon 2026 ends at 87% of normal, below average

The four-month southwest monsoon season of 2026 ended with around 87 per cent of normal rainfall, making it a below-normal season.
According to reports, central India fared best at 97 per cent of normal. The southern peninsula received only 76 per cent and the northeast got 74 per cent of the long-period average.
A late-September deep depression over Andhra Pradesh brought heavy rain to Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Chhattisgarh before the monsoon withdrew.
The IMD expects the withdrawal from the remaining parts of the country to complete in the first week of October. A low-pressure area may develop over the Andaman Sea around October 13.
Attention now shifts to the post-monsoon season. The IMD has forecast normal-to-above-normal rainfall for Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and south interior Karnataka between October and December.
Farmers in the top producing states received up to 30 per cent less rain than average this season, raising concerns over kharif output of pulses and oilseeds.
