Asian Games 2026: How India Won 85 Medals

India closed the Asian Games 2026 in fourth place with 85 medals: 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze. Here is how the campaign unfolded and what it means.

The tally is India’s second-highest ever, behind the 106 medals of Hangzhou 2023. China led with 341 medals, followed by Japan with 267 and South Korea with 149. Eleven of India’s 21 golds arrived in the final two days.

The golds were spread wide. Athletics brought 24 medals, shooting 15, archery five golds and boxing three. The cricket and hockey teams defended their titles. The men’s hockey team beat Malaysia 5-1 and earned direct qualification for LA 2028.

The Games produced historic firsts. Neeru Dhanda became the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games trap shooting gold. Kumkum Mohod, 17, became the first Indian woman to win individual recurve archery gold. Pranavi Urs won India’s first women’s golf gold.

The closing ceremony is today in Nagoya, with Dhanda carrying the flag. The next Asian Games will be held in Doha in 2030.
