Modi-Trump Call Pushes India-US Interim Trade Deal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on September 30 to review bilateral cooperation. The leaders discussed trade, defence, energy and critical technologies.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. They agreed to maintain close engagement to deepen cooperation.
The call came as Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal held talks in the United States. Goyal met US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on October 1 on the sidelines of the G20 trade ministers’ meeting in Milwaukee.
Greer said the talks were in their final stretch but added that a deal was not imminent. He said both sides had identified the universe of items that remain sticking points. Indian goods have faced an extra 10% US tariff since July 24 under a Section 301 action.
Goyal is in the US from September 29 to October 5. Greer said Modi and Trump may speak again soon to assess progress on the trade talks.
