OpenAI’s Dot Agent Works Inside a Virtual Machine

OpenAI has introduced Dots, a new agent platform built around always-on AI assistants. Each Dot works inside its own virtual machine on OpenAI’s cloud computers.
The virtual machines come preloaded with apps like Blender, GIMP, Inkscape, Kdenlive and FreeCAD. A Dot can also reach into a user’s personal computer through the desktop ChatGPT app.
Dots have blobby, anthropomorphic avatars and customizable names. OpenAI says they can do nearly anything with their cloud computer, including ordering dinner, though early tests showed mixed results.
The platform is aimed at workplace tasks rather than personal shopping. Dots function more like coworkers that can operate other software, according to early hands-on reviews.
For now, each user gets one Dot. The rollout starts with top-tier accounts, including the 100-dollar-per-month Pro plan. Multiple Dots per user are planned for the future.
Early testers reported mixed results. The agent sometimes stumbled on security checks and human verification steps on websites.
