Volantis raises $88 million for AI memory chip tech

US startup Volantis has raised $88 million in Series A funding to develop light-based connections between computer chips and memory for AI data centres.
The round was announced on October 1 and led by Lachy Groom and Abstract Ventures, with participation from John Doerr and VXI. It takes Volantis’s total funding to $97 million.
Volantis is building optical links using tiny lasers called VCSELs. These let AI chips talk directly to memory chips using light instead of copper wires. The technology could let one AI chip connect to 220 memory chips, up from just 8 today.
That matters because AI models are limited by memory bandwidth. Faster links between compute and memory mean models can train and run more quickly. Volantis plans to ship its first chip in 2027.
“AI models are doubling in size every few months. The memory wall is the biggest bottleneck in the industry,” chief executive Tapa Ghosh said. The startup was founded by Ghosh and fellow optical-networking veterans.
