Spain floods: 142mm rain in hours kills 102-year-old woman

A 102-year-old woman drowned in her home after flash floods devastated the town of Madrigueras in southeastern Spain on Friday, regional authorities said on Saturday.
About 142 litres of rain per square metre fell on the town in just over two hours on Friday evening, turning streets into rivers. Cars were swept away and carried through the streets, and floodwater rose more than a metre inside homes, CNN reported.
Firefighters rescued 90 people, many of them trapped in their homes. The body of the elderly woman was found inside her house where the water had risen to over 1 metre.
President Emiliano Garcia-Page visited the town on Saturday to assess the damage. Emergency crews cleared debris and worked to restore power and water.
The flooding follows the hottest summer on record in Spain, where almost 2,150 people are thought to have died from heat-related causes in August. Authorities kept the Castilla-La Mancha emergency plan at Level 1 for Albacete as cleanup began.
