Shabana Azmi joins CJP protest at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park

Veteran actor Shabana Azmi joined the Cockroach Janta Party’s “Jail Bharo Andolan” at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on October 2, backing the protest over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Speaking before taking the stage, Azmi said: “Voting is our right. If anyone tries to take away our right to vote, we will do what is necessary through democratic means.” Addressing the gathering, she added: “We do not have to tolerate anything wrong.”
The protest, organised by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Naseeruddin Shah, Vishal Dadlani, filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj and singer Rekha Bhardwaj were also present.
Mumbai Police had denied permission for the gathering, citing venue restrictions, but thousands gathered at the venue. The Election Commission has said its decisions, including on the SIR, were taken unanimously.
The CJP has said its agitation is independent and will not join the opposition’s October 6 march to the Election Commission.
