Decider day: West Indies chase 24-year series win in India

West Indies play the third and final ODI against India in New Chandigarh on Saturday, with coach Daren Sammy hoping to end a 24-year wait for a bilateral ODI series win on Indian soil.
West Indies last won an ODI series in India in 2002-03, when Carl Hooper’s side beat Sourav Ganguly’s India 4-3. India have not lost any of the 13 bilateral ODI series between the teams since.
Sammy has framed the series as a measure of where his young side stands. “It’s been 24 years, we’ve not won a series here in India. So it’s a great opportunity for us as a team to come out here and challenge ourselves,” he said before the series.
The three-match series began in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27 and moved to Guwahati on September 30. For West Indies, it is also preparation for the ODI World Cup qualifiers in February, after they finished 10th and missed automatic qualification.
Even a 3-0 sweep would not lift West Indies into direct qualification, so the series is about momentum ahead of the qualifiers.
