What are sovereign AI data centres? India’s Rs 1.4 lakh crore bet

India is racing to build sovereign AI data centres. Odisha alone cleared about Rs 1.42 lakh crore in such projects this week. Here is what the term means.
A sovereign AI data centre keeps a country’s data and AI computing inside its own borders. Governments and companies can run sensitive workloads without depending on foreign clouds.
These are not ordinary data centres. AI workloads need far more computing density, power, cooling and high-speed networking than regular servers.
SentraForge AI will build a 120 MW sovereign AI campus in Odisha for Rs 22,634 crore. It targets government, enterprise and research users.
Adani’s arm got approval for a 1 GW, Rs 1.04 lakh crore data centre park in Odisha. HCLTech and Sarvam AI are building a Rs 14,257 crore AI-optimised facility.
The goal is simple. As AI becomes central to the economy, India wants the computing power to sit on Indian soil.
