Kavach 5.0 To Raise Mumbai Local Train Frequency By 30%

Mumbai’s local trains may soon run more often. The Kavach 5.0 train-protection system could raise service frequency by up to 30 percent on existing infrastructure. The plan was discussed on October 2, 2026.
Kavach is an automatic train protection system developed in India. It prevents collisions and helps trains run closer together safely. Higher frequency means shorter waiting times for millions of daily commuters.
Mumbai locals are the lifeline of the city. Overcrowding is a daily problem on key routes. Even a small rise in frequency can ease the crush in peak hours.
Passenger groups met Maharashtra BJP chief Ravindra Chavan on October 2. As many as 48 commuter groups took part. They discussed local train issues and demands. The Kavach upgrade is expected to roll out in phases. Commuters hope it brings real relief soon. Railway officials say safety remains the top priority. Kavach has already been tested on several routes. The system alerts drivers and can apply brakes automatically. For commuters, the real test will be punctuality during rush hour. More trains also mean less crowding at stations.
