Thane police arrested one person in connection with the murder of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Pradeep Purnekar. Four others have been booked. A special investigation team is probing the case. The developments were reported on October 2, 2026.

Purnekar was shot dead on the night of September 29 in Thane’s Manpada-Manorama Nagar area. The attack took place around 9 pm near his office, within the jurisdiction of the Kapurbawdi police station. He was rushed to a hospital on Ghodbunder Road, where he died during treatment.

The arrested accused is Prakash alias Papya Shinde, described as a former aide and close associate of Purnekar. He was present during the attack and helped take Purnekar to the hospital. Investigators later grew suspicious of his role. Another suspect is being questioned.

The killing has sparked political outrage. Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders including Aaditya Thackeray and Sanjay Raut attacked the state government over law and order. Police are examining CCTV footage to trace the shooters. The probe is ongoing.
